Introduction:

Vermiculiteis the name of a group of hydrated laminar minerals (aluminium-iron magnesium silicates) which look like mica. Horticultural vermiculite is processed with massive heat that expands it into accordion shaped pellets composed of multiple layers of thin plates. It will not rot, deteriorate, or mold and is enduring, odourless, non-toxic and sterile. Vermiculite is generally a neutral 7.0. It is very lightweight, does not rot and mixes easily with other mediums.

Now, Vermiculite has established itself as a firm favourite amongst many discerning growers who appreciate the improvements it gives to their compost formulation.

Usage:

  • Gardening potting medium, especially applicable to sowing propagation and succulent leaf propagation
  • Soilless growing medium: exfoliated vermiculite is combined with other materials such as peat or composted pine bark to produce soilless growing medium for the professional horticulturalist and for the home gardener.

Advantages:

Vermiculite has special stereochemical structure, thus it has strong water retentionand air permeability:

  • Improves soil structure through soil aeration. As a soil conditioner: Where the native soil is heavy or sticky, gentle mixing of vermiculite – up to one-half the volume of the soil – is recommended. This creates air channels and allows the soil mix to breathe.
  • Increases water and nutrient retention.Where soils are sandy, mixing of vermiculite into the soil will allow the soil to hold the water and air needed for growth. Reducing watering frequency. This allows succulents to keep their soil moist (not wet) for longer, making it easier for succulent roots to grow without drying out or watering too much.
